A Unique Experience at American University in Washington, D.C

During my time in Washington, D.C. through American University's Washington Semester Program, I immersed myself in the intersection of policy, advocacy, and political practice at the national level.

Based in the heart of the nation's capital, I worked and studied alongside policymakers, journalists, and advocacy professionals, gaining firsthand exposure to how legislation, foreign policy, and human rights work move from theory into practice.

I took part in a policy simulation hosted by the Korea Economic Institute, working through a mock nuclear crisis and peace talks scenario involving North Korea. Each participant represented a different country or stakeholder, and we had to negotiate in real time as the situation escalated, balancing deterrence, diplomacy, and the risk of miscalculation. It gave me a much better feel for how high-stakes negotiations actually unfold, where every move has to account for what the other side might do next, and where compromise is a lot harder to reach than it looks on paper.
